Deputy President William Samoei Ruto is the most protected Deputy President/Vice President since independence in Kenya.
On a report submitted to the National Assembly committee on National Security by Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiangi, PS Karanja Kibicho and Inspector General of Police, Hilary Mutyambai; the deputy president has over 250 security guards protecting him and his private properties contrary to other vice presidents Kenyan has ever had.
Jaramogi Odinga who was the first vice president had 30 security guards, Joseph Murumbi had 22, Daniel Arap Moi had 34, Mwai Kibaki had 26, Josephat Karanja had 22, George Saitoti had 30, Musalia Mudavadi had 22, Michael Wamalwa had 22, Moody Awori had 22, Prime Minister Raila Odinga had 57 while Kalonzo Musyoka had 26.
The report also indicated that the security of the deputy president is categorized into three layers with the inner layer comprising of 74 presidential escort unit officers, 5 GSU drivers and body guards, and 6 DCI officers.
The outer layer is composed of 121 Administration Police officers and 24 hours’ mobile patrol by OCPDs.
The last category is the auxiliary security layer which include 51 police officers assigned to protect various properties owned by the Deputy President.
Some of the properties owned by Ruto being manned by police officers attached to William Ruto include Kitengela gas, Weston Hotel, Murumbi farm, ADC Laikipia Mutara farm, Dolphine Hotel, Mata Farm, Elgon view private residence, Koitalel Poultry farm, Private residence in kosachei and Kwae Island Development Ltd.
The report by CS Matiangi puts Ruto is the public limelight as not only the most protected deputy president but also as one of the state officers misusing police officers by deploying them to his private businesses.
