Background
Joseph Gitari is the current MP for Kirinyaga Central serving for a third term after trouncing the incumbent John Wambugu in the 2022 general election who was defending his seat on a Jubilee ticket. Gitari had served as the Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament from 2011 to 2017 when lost Jubilee nomination to John Wambugu and later joined Martha Karua party and deputized her in the quest to be the second governor of Kirinyaga County. They were however trounced by Anne Mumbi Waiguru who was seeking the seat on a Jubilee ticket.
Gitari was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kirinyaga Central following a nullification of constituency election in a petition that had been filed by Daniel Karaba against Ngata Kariuki who had been declared the winner. The court ordered a recount but the Electoral Commission of Kenya offices in the constituency were set ablaze burning all the ballot boxes and doing a recount was impossible.
In the by-election, he vied on a Party of National Unity ticket and managed to trounce both Ngata Kariuki and Daniel Karaba. In 2013, he vied on TNA ticket and he won the election with a big margin.
Joseph Gitari Early Life and Education
Joseph Giati was born and raised in Kirinyaga County. After Primary School, he joined Kamuiru Secondary School in 1986 where he excelled and joined the University of Nairobi in 1992 to study Bachelor of Science in Surveying and graduated in 1997.
Joseph Gitari Career and Politics
After completing his studies, he founded a surveying Company named Geo Acre Surveys Ltd. He worked in the company as the Chief Surveyor from 1998 to 2011 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kirinyaga Central.
Between 2011 and 2017 when he was the Member of Parliament for Kirinyaga Central, Joseph Gitari served in various parliamentary committees namely Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations, Committee on Delegated Legislation and Committee on Implementation.
Following the 2017 election loss, he returned to GEO Acre Surveys Ltd where he held the position of the Chief Executive Officer.
Upon his elections for a third time in the National Assembly of Kenya, his first bill that he is sponsoring in the National Assembly is that of regulating real estate companies to protect consumers. In his bill, all real estates will have to part with Ksh 500 million as security.
