Primary school attendance in Nairobi county skyrockets courtesy of the school feeding program initiated by the Nairobi county government under Governor Johnson Sakaja’s leadership.
The school feeding which has so far enrolled over 200,000 pupils from public schools across the city has been praised as a transformative program which will not only ensure students have access to meals at an affordable price but also the meals that they feed on are nutritious.
Dishi na County school feeding program was one of Sakaja’s manifestos during the campaign trail and parents only part with Ksh 5 per day making the meals affordable to all.
The county government intends to roll out the school feeding program in all the city public schools and private schools willing to partner with the county government.
For the Dishi na County program to succeed, the county government under the leadership of Governor Sakaja is constructing central kitchens where meals are prepared before being distributed to enrolled primary schools. The recent central kitchen is in Umoja 1.
Owing to the success of the program, other county governments and constituencies through their Members of Parliaments have benchmarked in the city and initiated a replica of the program in their respective areas of administration. Gathoni wa Muchomba and Governor Irungu Kangata are some of the leaders who have rolled out a similar program to the Dishi na County.
In the city, the Dishi na County is expected to not only increase school attendance but also reduce dropout rates and the number of young people who engage in crime after forgoing their studies at an early age.
