Mombasa man arraigned in court for swindling an insuarance agency close to 600,000 by faking deaths of close family members.
A man who has been identified as Philip Odero was on a Thursday arraigned in Mombasa law courts before resident magistrate Viola Muthoni. Odero was charged with three counts of obtaining money in false pretence and one count of attempting to obtain money by false pretence.
Philip Odero pleaded guilty to obtaining 100,000 from a Mombasa based insurance company as the last expense claim for Veronica Onyango on 16th June 2021 by alleging that she had died on 2nd June 2021.
The suspect also pleaded guilty to the second count which he was being accused of obtaining another 100,000 from the same insurance company as the last expense claim for Benedetta Makanda. Odero allegedly made this claim on September 2nd, 2021.
Odero also admitted to obtaining Ksh 250,000 from the same insurance company through the same technique of faking close family members death and demanding for the last expense claim. On the third claim, he faked the death of one Benedetta Makanda.
On the fourth and the last count, Philp Odero pleaded guilty to attempting to obtain money by false pretence. On October 5th, 2021, he tried to swindle the Mombasa based insurance company money amounting to Ksh 250,000 by claiming that one Serephine Anyango had died on August.
The case will be mentioned on Feb 13th, 2023 following prosecution side request to be given additional time for them to conclude investigations.
