Kirinyaga women’s representative Njeri Maina has been rushed to Nairobi Hospital for urgent medical attention after she was allegedly roughed up by goons during a meeting in Kerugoya.
The first-time member of parliament/women representative was in the company of the Baragwi Ward Member of the County Assembly when the incident unfolded on Tuesday morning.
It is said that the two leaders were scheduled to hold several meet-the-people events in Kirinyaga Central Constituency and later address the media before a confrontation ensued and stones were hauled at them by the goons.
In footage that is in our possession, the Women’s Representative is heard claiming that she had been hit on the head with a stone by the goons. She also accused the current governor of Kirinyaga County of hiring goons to terrorize her opponents in the presence of police officers.
Following the incident, she was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention and medics had to shave her in order to evaluate the intensity of the inflicted head injury.
She was later transferred to Nairobi Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
Through a photo that has gone viral on social media, the women’s representative is seen seated in a wheelchair with her head shaved bald. She also has a white bandage on one side of her head.
Kirinyaga Politics and Njeri Maina Incident
The attack on her is linked to the division of Kirinyaga County elected leaders into two political formations, one formation being led by the Kirinyaga County Governor, Anne Waiguru, and the other formation being led by the County’s senator Kamau Murango.
Njeri Maina and Baragwi Ward MCA, David Mathenge, have been part of the senator’s core team that has been criticizing the agenda of the governor.
A similar incident ensued during President William Ruto visit to Mt Kenya where the senator was booed in the presence of the President in Kianyaga area.
The senator has requested President Ruto use the existing coffee and tea factories for the distribution of subsidized fertilizer instead of the Waiguru proposed new stores.
