Betty Maina is the second Women Representative of Muranga County elected on a United Democratic Alliance Party after successfully contesting against media personality Waithira Muithirania of Jubilee Party in the 2022 general elections.
Betty Maina came in to public limelight when she was appointed as a director of Athi Water Development Agency in 2019 by the then Principal Secretary for Water Mr. Joseph Wairagu.
Her prominence would however escalate and gain national wide coverage after details of a multimillion house she was building for her parents went public.
Betty Maina Early Life and Education
Betty Maina was born and raised in Kigumo constituency and she is said to be in her early 30s. She did her Kenya Certification of Primary Education in 2003 at Kangari Upcountry Academy and subsequently joined Naaro Girls in 2004 where she studied for four years until 2007 when she sat for her Kenya Certification of Secondary Education.
Fourteen years later, Betty Maina joined Mt Kenya University in 2018 to study a degree in development studies and graduated in 2022 before the general elections.
Life, Career and Politics
Betty N Maina is a household name not only in her Kigumo constituency but across the entire Murang’a county.
Before joining politics, she had dedicated her life in serving her community by engaging in various community projects such as fundraising for the needy students. It is during her community service volunteer-ship that she rubbed shoulders with Murang’a county leaders who later turned out to be very instrumental in her success.
After the 2013 general election where The National Alliance Party won most of the seats in Mt Kenya region, she was nominated by the then Women Representative of Murang’a County, Sabina Wanjiru Chege, as her office administrator. A position she held until 2019.
In 2019, Betty was appointed to the Board of Athi River Development Agency where she served until 2022. She resigned from the board to contest for the Murang’a County Women Representative position.
During the campaign trial, she was known for her creativeness in composing campaign songs to influence the electorates in favor of her party. One of the songs which is highly attributed to her is, ‘tugokira tene tugathure Ruto’ song.
Recently Betty Maina was engaged to Mathira Constituency Member of Parliament, Eric Wamumbi, in a colorful engagement attended by senior politicians from Mt Kenya region. The engagement was followed with a traditional ceremony at Betty’s parents residence in Muranga County.
