East African Community set to expand and become a powerhouse in Africa as Somalia inches closer to joining the regional body.
The East African Community Secretariat has shown some greenlight on Somalia bid to join the seven member state regional body, approximately one year after Democratic Republic of Congo joined.
This is after a validation tabled by the EAC secretariat on the validation of Somalia bid was adopted by the head of states and their representatives during the 21st Exra Ordinary Summit held in Bujumbura Burundi and chaired by the Burundi President, Évariste Ndayishimiye.
During the 21 Extra Ordinary Summit, it was agreed that the report be tabled once again during the nect extraordinary summit for the final verdict by the heads of state.
This is not the first time Somalia is pushing to be included in the regional body, Between 2012 and 2017, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud unsuccessfully pushed for the inclusion but his bid alongside that of DRC were rejected following war and political disorder in the two countries.
DRC was later accepted as a member state for East African Community in April 2022 and it is expected by the end of this year, Somalia bid to join EAC will be accepted.
If accepted, Somalia will become the 8th East African Community Member State and will be a big boost to fight againt terrorism and to the region’s economy.
