Background
Mary Maingi is the first female Member of Parliament for the larger Mwea Constituency. She was elected as the MP on her first attempt to run for a political position. According to her, she worked extremely hard to secure the United Democratic Alliance Party ticket by ensuring she was the strongest candidate in the Constituency.
In the 2022 general election, she was competing closely with the incumbent Kabinga Wathayu who was defending his seat on a Jubilee Party ticket. Kabinga however lost to Mary Maingi, making her the first female MP for Mwea constituency since independence.
Mary Maingi Eary Life and Education
Mary is the first born in a family of five. She was forced to take up leadership roles in her teenage years when her mother lost eye sight and she had to take care of her ailing mother together with her four siblings. She had to balance between school and doing menial jobs to support the family and the ailing mother.
After struggling through her primary school education, Mary Maina Maingi sat for her Kenya Certification of Primary Education and performed extremely well. She was enrolled at the mighty Kabare Girls where she sat for her Kenya Certification of Secondary Education and performed well too.
Between 1997 and 1999, she was enrolled for a Diploma in Public Relations at London Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She also acquired certification in Business writing from British Council Nairobi in the year 2000.
In the 2001, she was issued with a certificate of proficiency in insurance after going through mandatory training at the College of Insurance.
Mary Maingi also attained a Diploma in Insurance after going back to College of Insurance and studying for two years from 2002 to 2003.
After attaining a Diploma in Insurance Studies, Mary enrolled for her degree studies at Catholic University of East Africa in the year 2003 and pursued Bachelor of Commerce.
Immediately after completing her degree studies, she enrolled for a Master’s degree in Business Administration in the same institution and graduated two years later in 2009.
She has also participated in various trainings and summits in the course of her career some of them being Women Director’s Leadership Summit at Strathmore, Women Directors Leadership Summit at Cranfield University in United Kingdom, Corporate Governance Training for Directors by Center for Corporate Governance and Leadership for Purpose by Visionary Leadership and Management Consultant among other trainings.
Mary Maingi Career Life
Mary Maingi started her career in insurance in the early 90s. In the year 1991, she was a Sales Representative at the British American Insurance Company. One year later, she was the Marketing Executive for Dinners Finance.
In 1993, she transitioned to AAR Health Services where she served as a Unit Manager for six years until 1999 when she left and started her own Insurance Company called HP Insurance Brokers Ltd where she is the Chief Executive Officer to date.
Over the years she has served in various organizations boards such as Emergency Medical Services where she was the Board of Director for ten years, Postal Corporation of Kenya where she served as the Board of Director, Member of HR Board Committee, Chairperson of the Audit Board Committee and as the Board Director and Vetlab Golf Club where she served as the Chairperson for one year.
Politics
In the Naitional Assembly, she is a member of departmental committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity.
Mary Maingi now has a huge task ahead of her of transforming Mwea Constituency which is the biggest constituency in Kirinyaga County and which in terms of development, it lags behind.
