Meet Mugithi’s upcoming star Gasheni, who was born in Murang’a County and raised in a children’s home in Othaya, Nyeri County.
The now 23-year-old musician was raised in a children’s home in Nyeri County after being taken there by her biological mother’s sister.
At the children’s home, she joined over 70 other children under the care of one Muthondeki and his wife Mary.
When she completed her Secondary School Education, she wanted to pursue Mass Communication at the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication. Unfortunately, she could not pursue her dreams since she excelled among nine other students.
Gasheni shelved her dream and instead requested her ‘dad’ to help her study a short hotel management course as a stepping stone to pursue her dreams later. She landed a sales and marketing job after completing the hotel management short course.
She later resigned after securing a managerial job, which she never started, at the hotel located in Kiriaini.
Before starting her new job, she traveled to Nairobi where she stayed with her biological mother sister for some time and as days lapsed, she felt the need to stay in Nairobi.
Her cousin escorted her to Roysambu but she opted not to back to Nyeri, instead, she called her brother (not her biological brother but were raised together at the children’s home) and asked him to host her for two months and if she fails to make ends meet by then, she will go back to Nyeri.
A few days later she called one of the friends she had made during one of the Talent Search events in Nairobi, Kanda King, and he invited her to a club in Ruaka namely Wingu Bistro.
This was the first club for her to enter and perform. She sang two gospel songs, Githi ti uhoro wi gikeno mundu ohoretwo macegera and ngai murathimi. Elated fans awarded her Ksh 2000 for an exciting performance.
Later that night, she joined her friends at an event that was being held at Ruiru Rainbow and she was lucky to sit at the high table where ranking celebrities were sitting. During her stay at the event, she interacted with Sleepy David who later invited her to an event where she met DJ Faxto.
According to Gasheni Kamugithi, she used to hate DJ Faxto because of his song Ndii Mang’aa which to her was blasphemy. Little did she know that later in life, DJ Faxto would be her tall relative in the music industry.
In the event that she was invited by Sleepy David, DJ Faxto challenged the attendees to perform Daya song to the surprise of the guests in attendance; Gasheni sang the song. She however rejected the Ksh 2000 that he was offering and requested him to hold her hand in the industry.
Since the two started working together, she has released several hit songs. One of the songs namely Ngoma ya Muti has surpassed over one million views on YouTube. Others include Gakware Karia, Njera ya Wendo, and Kihiti.
While speaking to Inooro FM radio presenter and show host Jeff Kuria, she recently noted that she is pursuing her music career independently but still under DJ Faxto’s record label.
On family, both her parents are alive but she does not have a close relationship with them. In her revelation, she is on record saying that it will take time for her to forgive them after they abandoned her at a tender age. She is also on record saying that she declined college sponsorship from her biological father after he tried to justify why he abandoned her despite being in a position to give her a decent life during her early days.
