Former Nairobi County Governor, Mike Sonko, celebrates the acquittal of the Ksh 24 Million case as Director of public prosecution vows to appeal the case against the former governor.
Earlier today Mike Sonko was acquitted by the anti-corruption magistrates’ court of conspiring to embezzle Ksh 24 million from the County government of Nairobi.
The anti-corruption court magistrate, Douglas Ogoti, argued that the charges were defective and acquitted Sonko of the charges.
Mike Sonko is currently facing a series of charges ranging from money laundering to receiving bribes and conflict of interest. As of today, he has about 30 cases pending in court.
Some of these allegations are the ones that led to his ouster as the second governor of Nairobi County. His impeachment was confirmed by the Supreme Court and he was barred from contesting for any political office in Kenya.
Upon acquittal, Sonko wrote on Twitter that there is a God in heaven. He confessed to having seen the hand of God through his acquittal by the anti-corruption court.
“Wacheni Mungu aitwe Mungu. Leo nimeendelea kuona Mkono wake Bwana after being acquitted by the anti-corruption court Chief magistrate Hon. Douglas Ogoti. Asante Mungu,” Mike Sonko tweeted.
When the cases were being filed against him, Sonko accused the former regime of political witch hunt and instituting cases against him for supporting Ruto’s State House bid.
At one time, Mike Sonko undercover convoy was stopped in the middle of nowhere in Taita Taveta and he was bangled into a helicopter and flown to Nairobi for him to be arraigned in court.
The director of public prosecution has however vowed to institute an appeal to the case. Speaking shortly after Mike Sonko acquittal, Haji said that the anti-corruption court magistrate participated in the pretrial of the case and at no point did he claim that the evidence presented was defective.
