South African Man, Thabo Bester, who faked his own death arrested by police in Tanzania alongside a lady alleged to be his girlfriend.
A South African man who had been convicted of rape has been arrested by police while in Tanzania. The man is said to have disappeared from the prison where he was being held in 2022 May after he faked his own death.
Prior to his escape from prison, he was being held at a G4S privately managed prison based Bloenfotein. The suspect allegedly torched unidentified male beyond recognition to fake his death so that he can escape from prison.
His death was first questioned by a South African based media outlet, GroundUp, in November but police initiated fresh investigations earlier this year after DNA samples from the remnants of the torched body failed to match with that of Thabo Bester.
Thabo Bester had been prosecuted and sentenced for life imprisonment after he was found guilty of rape charges.
Following the revelations that Thabo Bester faked his own death to escape from prison, three employees working for the G4S privately managed prison were discontinued and are currently facing a scrutiny. If found guilty, they will be charged in court with multiple counts including the murder of the identified person who body was found in Thabo Bester Cell.
South Africa security officials are now expected to travel to Tanzania in order to accompany the three individuals as they are repatriated back to South Africa.
