Raila Odinga Causing Crisis
After the contentious 2022 general election whose campaign messaging from the two main competing alliances, Kenya Kwanza Alliance and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, was based on the status of the economy, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party disputed the results in the Supreme Court of Kenya and thereafter vowed not to recognize President William Samoei Ruto presidency.
The opposition led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have been holding protest rallies across the country accusing President Ruto of conspiring with the former Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, to rig the 2022 general elections.
Also amidst the high cost of living, the opposition chief has been calling upon the government to reintroduce subsidies on basic commodities such as Unga and Petroleum.
President Ruto Retaliation
On the other hand, President William Ruto has responded by initiating significant changes in his United Democratic Alliance Party. The National Executive Council relieved Veronica Maina her role as the Secretary General and appointed former senator Cleophas Malala as the Secretary General. Johnstone Muthama who had resigned as the party’s chairperson was replaced by Embu County governor Cecily Mbarire.
The changes were in response to the need of creating a team to countercheck opposition activities as the government focuses on service delivery to Kenyans.
