Two children Dead, six people injured after a grenade exploded in Eastern parts of Democratic Republic of Congo.
The children were hunting for birds in Ndunda field located in Ruzizi plain in South Kivu province when they came across a grenade that exploded killing two and injuring several others.
One of the local officials told the media that the children who were on a hunting mission mistook the grenade for a toy and picked up the explosive before it exploded in their hands.
“These children picked up the device that they confused with a toy, unaware that it was a grenade, and it exploded,” General Mupanzi told the press.
One of the deceased ,3 years old, died instantly after the explosion while the other one, 11years, succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment.
Additionally, six other people who included three children and two adults sustained serious injuries following the grenade explosion.
DRC Military spokeperson, Lieutenant Marc Elongo told AFP that they had sent a team to the scene to investigate the matter.
Though the source of the abandoned grenade is yet to be established, government officials suspect that it might have been abandoned by one of the 120 armed rebel groups who have been causing havoc in Eastern DRC.
