Kenyans will have to dig deeper into their pockets for DNA test contrary to sensational information on social media of DNA test kit costing Ksh 600 to 1000.
Contrary to information circulating on Social Media on DNA test kits costing Ksh 600 to 1000, it has now emerged that a DNA test for paternity costs not less than Ksh 16,000.
The alleged test kits that caused excitement to Kenyans on social media are sample collection equipment that are used to collect genetic material which is later analyzed in the laboratory.
Dr Ahmed Kalebi, a consultant pathologist and the retired CEO of Lancet Group of Labs, explained how the home test kit works and the cost that one incurs afterwards.
“Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of misinformation/ disinformation going round perpetuated by social media comments, even in mainstream media and by political leaders suggesting that the DNA test only costs KShs 800. That is NOT TRUE! The test costs more than KShs 16,000/-,” Dr Ahmed Kalebi tweeted.
Collected samples are submitted to molecular biology lab where they are analyzed by qualified lab technologists who charge between Ksh 10,000 and 30,000.
