IEBC is facing a looming crisis following a ruling by Justice Anthony Mrima of the High Court.
Justice Anthony Mrima on Tuesday evening quashed the requirement of Presidential candidates to submit copies of National Identity Card from their supporters in a case filed by Thirdway Alliance Party.
Requirement for of National Identity Cards by IEBC lead to disqualification of several Presidential Candidates including Usawa Party Leader and Murang’a County governor, Mwangi Wa Iria, Reuben Kigame and Thirdway Alliance Party Leader, Ekuru Aukot.
Although IEBC might challenge High Court ruling in the appellate court, the electoral commission might be forced to vet presidential aspirants afresh; a process which might delay printing of ballot papers.
The ruling might also increase the number of Presidential aspirants from four to six or seven, a move that can change 2022 arithmetic’s.
Following the ruling, Thirdway Alliance Party is now questioning the competence of the electoral commission chair Wafula Chebukati.
In a press release by Thirdway Alliance seen by UnreportedKe, the party is calling for resignation of Wafula Chebukati, quashing of Raila Odinga, William Ruto, Wahiga Mwaure and George Wajackoyah nomination and also shelving of presidential ballot printing until a proper nomination exercise is carried out.
