The death of LBTQ activist and crusader Edwin Chiloba has once again evoked a hot debate among Kenyans dividing the country in to two.
Following the heartbreaking news of the LGBTQ crusader, Kenyans rushed to social media to air their opinions with some opposed to the community deeds and some rallying behind recognition of their rights.
Kenya’s elected leaders and government officials were not left behind. A section of them too supported the community as others opposed and claimed LGBTQ is illegal in Kenya and members should be jailed.
Nairobi County women rep, Esther Passaris, condemned the murder of Edwin Chiloba and consoled his family and the LGBTQ community.
“I condemn in the strongest terms possible the senseless and brutal murder of Edwin Chiloba; fashion model, designer and activist. My heart goes out to his family, his friends and the LGBTQ+ community. Edwin’s life mattered. May he rest in peace” Esther Passaris tweeted.
Speaking to a section of Kapsaret residents, the area MP Mr Oscar Sudi blamed Edwin Chiloba for his death and accused the deceased of engaging in behaviors that are only acceptable in the United States and not in Kenya.
“There is a young man who was murdered because of issues to do with gay rights. There are claims that he was murdered because of a love triangle. He had two boyfriends…this is evil that is happening in US and other places and must be condemned,” sudi said
The Mp also added that such behaviors are not tolerated in the Kalenjin community and also castigated the LGBTQ activist for not castigating the murder but engaging LGBTQ campaign.
“As leaders, we are strongly condemning such lifestyle. If you want to engage in such evil thing, please do elsewhere. . .I was surprised that these gay rights activists are not condemning the murder but because the deceased was gay,” Sudi added.
Nyali MP, Mohamed Ali alias Jicho Pevu was not left behind. The controversial MP accused the community of engaging in ungodly acts and urged Kenyans not to engage in such acts.
“Let us not waste time discussing LQBTQ or whatever name they call it. It’s illegal, God doesn’t like it and we should not entertain it. On this one Democracy my foot! Jail them,” Mohamed Ali tweeted.
Kenya’s Principal Secretary of foreign affairs however outlined government’s commitment to build a society that is not biased regardless of citizen’s sexual orientation.
“Senseless end to a talented young model. We will continue to work hard to build a society that celebrates all persons no matter their orientation,” Korir Singoei
